Mr. Douchebag

07*16*10

The Main event

On the 4th of July I was at a raging party at Tom Dwan’s penthouse condo.  In the midst of the raging party I noticed that 40 of the best poker players in the world were there - shitfaced drunk and surly wouldn’t be playing Day 1A.  So with this information in mind I drove over to the Rio (I wasn’t drinking) and registered for Day 1A.

My first table broke within 15 minutes and I moved to what appeared to be a very soft table.  It featured several middle age men, two older gentlemen and a woman and only one kid under 30.  I often stereotype people’s play based on their sex, age, race etc., I alter this thinking once I have information on how they actually play, but until then I’m normally excited to play with anyone who is not an under 30 year old male  So I was happy with my table!  No surprise there though since World Series of Poker main event is undoubtedly the softest $10,000 buy-in tournament of the year.

Several players at my poker table were telling bad beat stories from past tournaments, and many others discussed the strategy involved in the playing of every hand.  These are both terrible ettiquie violations. No stranger in the whole world cares about your bad beat.  You are only inflicting emotional pain on them and this will make them hate you and try their hardest to bust you.   Stratgery talk on the other hand can only educate the players worse than you - and worse it lets the players who are better than you exploit the way you think.

A note to amateur players: You will not impress a top professional player with your strategy observeations guessing people’s hands etc.  They will just think you are a stone idiot.

The majority of players at my table played very loose and passive.  They limped in with many bad hands such as Q3s and K9o.  I frequently raised in position to isolate these weak players.  A gentlemen in a UB.net took great offense to this and started giving me the death stare whenever I played a pot and kept talking about how he was going to catch me.  With my lack of poker experience I was very terrified by this player, I mean what would I do if he got aces and limp re-raised me!?!?

Anyways, I ended up playing a pot where the lady on my right limped (like she did every hand), I raised with A8s and we both checked a J6233 board down to the river.  She showed pocket 7s and I mucked my hand.  Mr. Douhcebag (he lost gentlemen status), exploded and yelled I want to see that hand! While pointing at my mucked hand.  He technically could ask to do this due to a WSOP rule that players can request to see any hand that goes to showdown.  This rule is in place to prevent collusion and chip dumping, and abuse of it can result in a petantly. Now I quite certain that Mr. Douhcebag did not expect me of collusion and merely wanted to show the table what trash hands the aggressive lagtard kid was raising was raising with.  I could not let him Mr. Douchebag get the satisfaction of doing this so i quickly threw my hand into the muck and mixed it into all the other cards.

At this point Mr. Douchebag was quite furious and yelled, “HE CAN’T DO THAT!” and demanded the floor be called.  He explained to the floor what, “The fucking kid”, had just done, and asked for the floor to give me a penaltly.  I interrupted that I was greatly offended by his language and I knew that according to WSOP rules that use of the F word consisted a one-round penatatly.  The floor didn’t seem assumed at the situation and gave us both a warning.  All the yelling and tension had caused quite the stir and the table was now surrounded by ESPN cameras and journalists.

The next hand Miss Limp limps in front of me for 200 I make it 1025 with AQo, Mr. Doucebag calls from the Small Blind and Miss Limp folds.  The flop comes A45 and he check calls 1600. A 9 on the turn and we both check.  A 6 comes on the river, and I bet  7000 and he snap calls and flips up ATo.

I look at him flip up my hand and yell ship it and the pot is pushed my way.  He stands up and starts mumbling some things about me and said he needs a break.  I apologize telling him the last thing I wanted was for the fish to take a break and leave the table.

I am probably going to look like a brash, rude, arrogant kid on TV, but  suppose it won’t be the first time :).  I’m a little upset at myself for losing my cool, this is the first time it’s happened at the poker table in a long time, but at  least I got the best of Mr. Doucebag.

Alas, by the time I got around to editing and posting this I am already out of the main event.  Will try to start blogging with some regularity now that the WSOP is winding down.

A True Story

07*7*10

The following is a true story:

A young pro is relieving himself in the restroom of the Rio during a break of one of the preliminary WSOP tournaments. While he’s taking care of business Eskimo Clark wanders in and says, “Hi,” to Sam Grizzle who is washing his hands.

Sam replies, “Hey Eskimo, You still in the tournament?”

Eskimo responds: “Yea, I’m doing well have 28,000 in chips.”

Sam replies: “Cool, I have 30,000, want to swap 10%?”

Eskimo quickly says, “Yea,  book it.”

At this point Sam wishes him good luck and exits the washroom. At which point the unnamed pro wanders up to Eskimo and says, “Eskimo, I was at Sam’s table and I have to tell you he busted out over two hours ago.”

Eskimo smiles and responds, “It’s okay kid, I didn’t even play.”

WSOP Madness

WSOP Madness!

Sorry for the lack of recent updates - I’ve been in the middle of the WSOP grind!

So far I’ve played in 5 events and cashed in 3.  Not a bad record, but I havn’t  been able to go on a deep run once I’m in the money.  This is quite frustrating for a number of reasons.  First off once you get in the money stacks are normally so short that there isn’t a whole ton of skill left. And add this to the top-heavy prize pool payouts and you have to get lucky to make any serious money.  I’ve planning on playing in the $2500 8-game tournament tonight and hopefully I can make something happen.  I should have a big edge in this event as very few people are competent in every game.  I’m really looking forward to it!

Beside that I’ve played some 25/50/100NL at the Bellagio and some 100/200 PLO.  I’m about a 20k loser in the 25/50/100 game in limited action.  The game is very good at times with some rich amateurs coming in and mixing it up but you have to wade through countless hours of playing with nitty pros while waiting for these amateurs.  Most of the time I’d rather multi-table online.  In the 100/200PLO game I’ve broken about even - I played a fun hand where I get it all in a 60k pot with AA93 vs Sammy Fahras QQ3d2d and 5587 on AQ5r (with the 5 of diamonds).   The turn brought the Ad giving me quads but the river brought the 4d giving Sammy a striaght flush.  Sick!

Non-playing wise I’ve been writing and co-hosting a new pokernews show called “The Poker Industry” (with Jessa Hilton) that is going to be airing weekly on www.twoplustwo.com.  This show features interviews from some of the top players in the world - watch out for both Observer84 and Durrrr on early episodes along  with advanced strategy from some of the top poker minds in the world - FoxwoodFeinds, Keith Gipson, Odonkor1 etc. etc.  In addition to this it will also recap weekly poker news, and have some of the hottest models on the planet!  What more could you ask for.

Recently I’ve done two shows at http://www.Pokerstatic.com with my boys Mikey Stoz and Phil Galfond.  Check them out here: http://www.pokerstatic.com/on-the-table/on-the-table-phil-mikey-vanessa-and-guest-host-andrew-robl/

I also played on the new pokerstars show “The Big Game”:  Check out my episode (Week 2 episode 5) here: http://thebiggame.pokerstars.net/episodes/

People have been asking me where they can get rakeback on victory.  I’d reccmond using http://victorypokerrakeback.com as if you sign up through them you get rakeback straight from victory.

Sorry if this blog wasn’t up to my normal standanrds.  About to go play the $2500 8-game mix and didn’t have much time!

PARTYING IN PRAGUE

06*13*10

One great thing about being a sponsored player on VictoryPoker is the travel. Officially, I crisscross the globe to represent at online poker conferences – which, of course, I do; but these are conferences where most of the booths have open bars and the attending affiliates can handily out-drink your average degenerate poker pro. Inevitably, though, whenever the guys and I go on a trip for the site, we wind up hitting some of the most outrageous parties imaginable.

Such was the situation in Prague. The conference there ended with an exclusive party thrown by Calvin Ayre, best known for being the founder of Bodog. The Victory team managed to score 8 out of 200 tickets that were being distributed – and that, right there, should tell you how much fun we are. The party was pretty cool – flamethrowers outside, costumed acrobats walking around on stilts, an absinthe bar – but the only problem was that guys there outnumbered the girls by a pretty sick margin.

Lesson learned for the next Victory party: Make sure that there are at least twice as many girls in the house.

Sara Underwood was a victim of this terrible ratio. While it should be noted that Sara is very cool and didn’t really care, I did not like seeing her continually getting hit on by dudes who were blackout drunk! I remember seeing one guy come up from behind and start petting her hair. I had to swoop in and save her by convincing the guy to have a drink with me. Even Calvin wasn’t too crazy about the lack of females. When somebody introduced me to him, he didn’t look very thrilled. I think he was trying to figure out where all the girls are and wondering why he was talking to a male poker player.

After the party I went out for drinks with Ilari “Ziigmund” Sahamies and his friend Jasper Paakkonen. They met up with a whole posse of czech girls, a nice change from conditions at Calvin’s party, and I ended up getting pretty drunk. But not so drunk that I couldn’t stack some of the affiliates who were playing in a little $5/$10 no limit hold’em game at the casino where we were all staying.

A funny moment came after I busted one of the biggest affiliates in the business. He asked me to loan him $1,000. I had no idea who he was, and I had no interest in loaning him that kind of money. He swore he’d be good for it and gave me a wallet full of IDs and credit cards for collateral. I fronted him the cash and later found out that he’s a multimillionaire! Obviously, he paid me back pretty quickly.

I had such a good time hanging with Jasper and Ilari that I am going to meet them at the end of next month on their home turf.  Victory is going to do a charity event in Finland, and my understanding is that those guys are so plugged in there that going out it with them is like bar-hopping with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.

Can’t wait!

VictoryPoker in Europe!

05*24*10

As I’m writing this blog I just completed a six-mile jog through Prague in the pouring rain.  Most of the pedestrians took cover under buildings while I soldiered the rain  They gave me big smiles and  I’m sure they were thinking “Silly American”.  But It was worth it as I now feel totally alive.

I’m in Prague for the iGaming conference to promote Victory Poker with the rest of the Victory poker team.  I’ve been here once before and it’s one of my favorite cities in all of Europe.  There is so much History in the city, as it survived not only survived World War II,to but it has been ruled by so many different regimes during this existence.  This makes for an amazing display of architecture. Not to mention the nightlife is amazing :).

For the past few days I’ve been in London catching up with old friends and filming a photoshoot.  The theme of the photoshoot was a strip poker game between me and fellow Victory Pro’s Sara Underwood, Keith Gipson, Antonio Esfanardri and UK glamour models, Emma Glover, Rosie Jones and Victoria Moore.  Let me tell you there is nothing like being shirtless, surrounded by the most beautiful women on the planet to make you feel self-conscious!

Beside the shoot I got to catch with my good friends Josh Gould, John Tabatabai and Luke Trotman.  Luke recently won the charity tournament to raise money Thuy Doan that I wrote about a few weeks ago, being the great guy he is he decided to donate a huge chunk of his winnings back to Thuy.  The tournament was an overall success and we will able to raise several thousand dollars for Thuy.  Which truly makes me happy.  She is one of the sweetest people I know, and I’m sure she will rise above this and be kicking ass at the poker-tables this summer!

These guys along with my friend Mark Mark Teltscher (a good friend of mine who has made a forante staking players), showed us an amazing time at the London nightclubs.  Being with people who know the scene makes all the difference. One night after a particularly fun evening at Whisky Mist; Sara Underwood challenged me to a drunken wrestling match.  I agreed to fight with one hand behind my back and our camera man/cool cat Trevor Alder whipped out his flip cam to record it.  But at the last second I sobered up a little bit, and realized I didn’t want to break my 90lbs little sister in half!  Next time I try to outdrink some Finns though she better look out!

Be on the lookout for cool videos and photos from the strip-poker photoshoot at both my blog, andrewrobl.com, victorypoker.net and coinflip.com over the next week or two.
